Does anyone know how contestants go about gaining approval to bring their own hair/makeup person to Miss Arkansas. I know lots of the girls use Jane White, but how do they go about getting their own person approved? Thanks in advance for any help!

Back when I competed, Billy Hoyt was in charge of the hair and makeup room. I think the responsibility now belongs to Jane White. You just call Jane and tell her the name of your person so that she can make sure that everyone has space in the room. Here's her number : (501) 223-8012. Good luck!

Miss Arkansas contestants may bring their own hair and/or makeup artists as long as they are licensed cosmetologists or aestheticians. Just have them contact me and I will give them the specifics. 501-223-8012 Jane White Cosmetics Studio jwmakeup@aol.com

I am a little bit perplexed by the posting that Jane White approves who is allowed backstage?? Is this a monopoly? Back in the day it was $500.00 for Jane to do makeup for the week, and that was nearly ten years ago! I can only imagine inflation... Jane does beautiful work but if a true professional wants to donate their services to a contestant why not be allowed to do so?? And on a side note, as a professional hairdresser I work with several make-up artists, whom strictly do make-up and the Arkansas State Board of Cosmetology DOES NOT require a any special liscensure for make-up artists so why would Miss Arkansas?? I think someone doesn't like competition....Just Sayin

I agree!! These girls have to pay for soooo much during competition from their intial CMN fee to sponsor fees to state cmn, salute page, wardrobe, etc. so if someone wants to help along the way with a service, whats the problem?? The problem is Ms. White doesn't want to lose a grand to any one else!

Goodness gracious people. If there is something for yall to complain about, you're going to find it.
Miss Arkansas chooses who they want and do not want backstage for the competition. They entrust Jane with a lot of girls and I'm sure they trust her and her judgement. Jane is such a sweet lady and she is AWESOME at what she does!! Why WOULDN'T you want to use her? She is going to enhance your own natural beauty.
This has gotten to be ridiculous. Go find something else to complain about.

If you don't want to spend money on hair/make up, you are in the WRONG business!!! You should know coming into the Miss AR system that you are going to have to shell out some big bucks. Just suck it up and get over it.

I understand that in some states, no one is allowed to do hair/make-up...the girls are required to do their own. As a former contestant, I think that this is a wonderful idea. More time could be spent in rehearsal, making personal appearances to promote the pageant (and lets face it, attendance is down), or the girls could do something to promote CMN and the Arkansas Children's Hospital.

I think the word "approved" is the reason that Jane's role is making some people upset.
Jane doesn't "approve" any of the hair dressers. She is simply in charge of keeping up with how many professionals are in the H & M room at one time, and making sure everyone there is a licensed professional. Two reasons:
1. You can't have 25 hair dressers in that little room. I competed for three years, and I never heard of anyone being denied the chance to bring their own H & M people- "No monopoly."
2. Licenses are required, so that 45 contestants don't have their mom's in the H and M room.
Two other things that I think deserve clarification:
1. Jane still charges $500.
2. No one is backstage, including Jane, until Saturday night. On Saturday her services are free to anyone in the top ten who wants a touch up whether they have used her all week or not.
Other states, and even some of our locals in Arkansas do have a policy against hair and makeup people. Probably to eliminate the mass chaos from moms and over-crowding. Having someone in charge of the H & M room eliminates those problems while allowing the option to have professionals. I think it's a good system.
